Happy February! I can’t believe we are already in the full swing of 2014… and as I sit down to write this month’s newsletter, like I have several times in the last few weeks without success, I again, find myself stumped as to what exactly to write about.
Of course, in keeping with the tradition of writing about those special particulars like Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, and all the others that we visit year after year, I should of course write to you about LOVE. After all, it is Valentine’s Day. It’s the month we celebrate LOVE… or at least remind ourselves to!
And as I started to formulate in my mind what I wanted to share with you about LOVE, I thought, “Oh, in October instead of writing about Halloween I should write about Breast Cancer Month or about Hispanic Heritage Month and maybe this month, since its Black History Month, maybe I should write about that! OH MY GOD!” And then my mind got jumbled up and all confused, and again I didn’t know what to write about!
And then it HIT ME … like a BRICK IN THE HEAD!
“Why don’t I write about ALL of them?” I thought.
“And how am I going to do that?” I asked myself.
And then it HIT ME again! (By the way, same brick)
And the answer came… “I JUST DID!”
You might be confused by this. I know I was! You might have to go back and re-read the last several lines to let it digest… Go ahead; I’ll give you a minute! I pondered this myself for quite some time.
What am I getting at here? What’s the message? Why do we celebrate? I mean, why do we celebrate LOVE on Valentine’s Day and why do we celebrate our birthdays and anniversaries and life events? What’s the purpose, of all of it?
Isn’t the purpose of our celebrations to bring recognition to an event or an emotion or a situation that is worthy of some type of HONOR? And if so, and that event, emotion or situation is worthy of honor… is it only worthy of honor on that particular day during that particular event, situation or emotion?
It seems to me that we need a reminder of sorts, to celebrate that which deserves HONOR. We need a date on a calendar and Facebook posts about LOVE! We need to be reminded and made aware of where to focus, of what to do, of how to be, and even of what to celebrate and when!
AWARENESS. It’s joyful! Once we are made aware, the planning begins, the tossing around of ideas, the celebration plans, the lists that are made! The laughing and smiling soon begin and the anticipation grows, the desire to buy the perfect gift, create the perfect ambiance and order the right desert! And all of this with the hope to sum it all up into that one spectacular moment at dinner on February 14th! Yes! See. I love you!
All thanks to Walgreens for putting up a sign that says, “MILK $2.99 and VALENTINE’S DAY TREATS ON SALE” Thank you Target for the sappy commercial reminding me of Valentine’s Day and I see that Hallmark has outdone themselves this year!
It appears to me that when we are aware, happiness follows. When we are aware, we honor what we love. Think about it. When we are aware or made aware of something we give it thought, we give it attention, we get excited, we smile, we wish, we wonder, we hope. We give it honor. Try to be aware of all the potential happiness around you! Don’t be limited only to the awareness campaigns of today telling you how, when, and why!
I have settled into the understanding of this message. Our goal for each day should be to live in awareness because awareness is where we find happiness, anticipation, excitement, wonder, awe, compassion and validation! It’s where we find love! It’s where we find honor. Live Awake, Live Aware and your dwelling will be decorated with celebration!
